What Is Exclusivity in UGC, and Should You Charge for It?

Exclusivity is a promise not to work with a brand's competitors for an agreed time. Because it can cost you other deals, it is usually priced separately from the content and usage fees.

Define the category

"Beauty" could rule out hundreds of brands, while "vitamin C serums" rules out far fewer. Name the category as narrowly as you can, or list the specific competitors.

Set a start and an end

Agree the dates in writing. Be clear about whether exclusivity lasts only for the usage period, or also before and after it.

Work out what you are giving up

Think about how often you work with that category and what those deals usually pay. There is no standard rate, so base your price on what the restriction could cost you.

Check your current deals

Before you agree, make sure no active deal conflicts with the new restriction. A list of your active usage periods makes this easier.
