How to Negotiate UGC Usage Rights With a Brand

Start by asking how the brand plans to use the content, then price that scope as its own line. If the budget is tight, reduce the length, channels or territory instead of simply lowering your fee.

Ask before you quote

Ask where the content will run, whether it will be paid, for how long and in which countries. A brand that has not decided can start with a short term and renew later.

Separate the line items

Show the content fee, usage fee and any exclusivity separately. This makes it clear what each part pays for, and it gives you something to adjust without discounting your work.

Offer two or three options

For example, offer 30 days of paid usage, or 90 days at a higher fee. Options move the conversation from whether to pay for usage to which period suits the campaign.

Trade terms, not just price

If a brand wants a lower fee, offer a shorter period or fewer channels. If it wants more rights, explain what that adds to the fee. Confirm the final scope in writing.
